This week, we shine a light on another set of three companies that made their first Finovate appearances at our first FinovateEurope conference in 2011: a digital advertising platform for banks, an innovator in data-driven digital banking, and an e-billing/billpay pioneer.


Cardlytics Delivering Relevant Rewards Before it was Cool

Cardlytics was a young company when it made its Finovate debut at FinovateEurope in London in 2011. The Atlanta, Georgia-based firm already had gained significant traction for its technology: a transaction marketing platform that helped banks and retailers offer rewards to customers based on their individual buying behavior. During its demo, Cardlytics noted that its technology reached tens of millions of consumers via hundreds of retailers in the U.S. who were leveraging the platform to deliver what have now become table stakes in the loyalty and rewards business: precise targeting and highly relevant offers. Cardlytics returned to the FinovateEurope stage a year later, earning a Best of Show award for its latest loyalty management solution.

From a company with 100 employees and more than $27 million in funding in 2011, Cardlytics has grown into a leading advertising platform for banks and other financial institutions. The company boasts more than 184 million bank customers on its platform and more than $650 million in customer rewards paid. Cardlytics went public in 2018, and currently trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker CDLX. The company has a market capitalization of more than $169 million.

“We delivered solid double-digit growth despite the serious challenges present in the economy,” Cardlytics CEO Karim Temsamani said in November when the company shared Q3 financials. “While the economy may be uncertain, I believe there is inherent resiliency in platforms that prove return on ad spend, and I am positive we can grow profitably.” Temsamani joined the company as CEO this summer, taking over from co-founder Lynne Laube who is retiring from the leadership post. Temsamani comes to Cardlytics from Stripe, where he worked as Head of Global Partnerships and, before that, Head of Banking and Financial Products.


Lodo Software, D3 Technology, and the Road from PFM to Data Driven Digital Banking

These days, the idea of fintechs coming from places other than Silicon Valley is increasingly commonplace. But in 2011, there was something more than a little novel about the fintech innovation that was coming out of places like Omaha, Nebraska – courtesy of startups like Lodo Software.

Making its Finovate debut at FinovateEurope 2011, Lodo Software demoed a cross-selling solution that helped banks leverage the data gathered by the PFM component of the platform to personalize offers and marketing campaigns. The product, OurCashFlow, organized and analyzed customer data to ensure that financial institutions are sending the right messages to the right customers at the right time. The platform’s messages and notifications are scheduled within the platform and are delivered to customers via their PFM dashboard.

Lodo Software rebranded as D3 Technology in 2014 in a move that CEO Mark Vipond said reflected “the company’s evolution from a personal financial management software provider to the creator of one of the market’s only true omnichannel, data driven digital banking solution.” The company created D3 Banking to help financial institutions deliver a consistent, personalized, banking experience anywhere, at any time, and on any device. Five years later, in the summer of 2019 , fellow Finovate alum NCR announced that it would acquire the company.

“NCR is a great fit for D3 and the timing is right for us to combine forces to create a powerful digital transformation platform for large financial institutions,” Vipond said when the acquisition was announced. “This transaction enables us to capitalize on new market opportunities and bring top-tier capabilities to our mutual and future clients.”


AcceptEasy: A Pioneer in E-Billing and Billpay via Email

Enabling secure and straightforward e-billing and payments via email was the innovation championed by Netherlands-based fintech AcceptEmail at FinovateEurope in 2011. Founded in 2006 and launching its solution less than a year later, AcceptEmail offered a three-click process for customers to pay bills directly from their email accounts without requiring manual data entry and re(entry). The company’s technology brings convenience to the billpay process for consumers and helps billers realize lower DSO (days sales outstanding) due to more customers paying their bills faster as well as less collection activity. The platform also supports credit management (notifications and reminders) as well as smart SEPA Direct Debit notifications.

The company was acquired by Serrala in February 2020 for an undisclosed amount and announced a rebrand to AcceptEasy. The rebranding was designed to reflect the fact that the company had evolved beyond email to become a bill service provider that enables payments in all digital channels. “The flexibility and architecture of our technology is perfect for all sorts of transactional messaging,” AcceptEasy CEO Peter Kwakernaak explained. “The payment moment is becoming a personalized and interactive contact moment .. (it) is one of the most important steps in the customer journey.” He added, “Our services make it possible for enterprises to provide consumers and small businesses an optimized brand experience and save costs in the process.

BlockFi Taps Cardlytics for New Rewards Offering

BlockFi Taps Cardlytics for New Rewards Offering
  • Blockchain-driven financial platform BlockFi has partnered with purchase-based intelligence firm Cardlytics to launch BlockFi Offers.
  • The new rewards program will enable BlockFi cardholders to earn up to 10% crypto back on select purchases.
  • BlockFi Offers rewards can be accrued on top of BlockFi’s existing 1.5% crypto back on all purchases.

Earning crypto is about to get easier for users of BlockFi, a blockchain-driven financial platform. That’s because the New Jersey-based company is partnering with purchase-based intelligence firm Cardlytics to launch a new rewards program called BlockFi Offers.

The BlockFi Offers rewards program will allow BlockFi’s Rewards Visa cardholders to earn up to 10% crypto back when they use their card to make purchases at select brands and restaurants. Participating retailers include Shake Shack, H&M, Finish Line, Costco, Meta Quest, Jared, and more.

“Partnering with BlockFI to bridge the gap between crypto and traditional financial institutions to deliver a flexible solution for their customers to shop, pay and be rewarded is very exciting,” said Cardlytics FI EVP Farrell Hudzik. “As blockchain and digital currencies become more accepted, it is imperative that we facilitate universal redemption opportunities.”

The crypto rewards launching today can be earned on top of BlockFi’s 1.5% crypto back on every purchase. Cardlytics automatically adds the offers to each cardholder’s BlockFi account at the end of every month.

Founded in 2017, BlockFi seeks to bridge the gap between cryptocurrencies and traditional financial and wealth management products. Since launching its Rewards Visa credit card, BlockFi has added more than 85,000 cardholders and distributed more than $26 million in crypto rewards to those users.

BlockFi Offers will be available to all BlockFi Rewards cardholders before the end of this month.

Cardlytics, which has been facilitating rewards and offers since launching in 2008, also helps marketers gain insight into consumer behavior by analyzing where and when consumers spend their money. The company went public on the NASDAQ under the ticker CDLX in 2018 and has a current market capitalization of $986 million.

Loyalty and rewards may seem like dated technology. After all, the conversation around loyalty and rewards peaked in 2012 when merchant-funded rewards and in-statement offers were the hottest new customer acquisition bait.

Today’s banking environment that focuses on the customer is proving that the technology isn’t all hype, however. Almost a decade after the merchant-funded rewards conversation, there’s still activity going on in the loyalty and rewards space.

As proof, banking app and smart card Curve announced today it is partnering with purchase-based marketing intelligence firm Cardlytics, which will power Curve’s new rewards program. Dubbed Curve Rewards, the app will offer Curve users a range of rewards from Cardlytics’ brand partners, including Pret a Manger, JustEat, FatFace, Harvey Nichols, and Cult Beauty. Two of the merchants piloting Curve’s new program, Harvey Nichols and Cult Beauty, will offer 20% off and 5% off respectively.

Curve Rewards leverages Cardlytics’ purchase intelligence data and will help customers earn while they spend. This data-driven approach ensures that the rewards offered to the consumer are personalized to their spending habits.

“Today’s consumers want a reward scheme that is tailored to how they shop and why they shop,” said Cardlytics’ Head of Bank Partnerships Campbell Shaw. “We’re pleased to have built a reward scheme for Curve that does just that, putting customers back in the driving seat while building loyalty and engagement for Curve.”

The partnership is especially notable for Cardlytics. In the company’s thirteen year history, the partnership with Curve is its first digital-native brand. Up until this point, Cardlytics’ partnerships were primarily with traditional financial institutions, including Lloyds Banking Group, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Santander.

Yes, Banks Can Compete with Apple’s New Credit Card

What’s in your wallet? Or rather, what’s in banks’ clients’ wallets? Some sexy competition appeared on the market yesterday, as Apple announced the pending launch of its own credit card in collaboration with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard.

The card is touted more for its mobile and digital qualities than its shiny titanium finish. Despite the shine, however, many of the card’s features and offerings aren’t new. And that’s good news for banks. While traditional financial institutions aren’t as sexy as tech companies such as Apple, they are generally viewed as more trustworthy. And with that kind of foundation, all banks need to do is piece together the features into their own credit card offering and market it properly.

Fortunately, there are plenty of fintech firms out there to help. Here are some of the features Apple is promoting and a list of corresponding fintechs that can help banks take the same approach.

Physical card security

Apple boasts a titanium card with the customer’s name etched on the front– no credit card number, no cvv code, no expiration date. All of that information is tucked away inside the app. Physical card innovator Dynamics takes a similar (though admittedly less visually appealing) approach. The Pennsylvania-based company offers a computer-in-a-card that hides part of the card number, the cvv code, and expiration date on the physical card until the consumer enters their PIN into the card. As an added bonus, Dynamics also offers in-card loyalty and rewards features, as well as a card that hosts multiple numbers, allowing customers to toggle between debit and credit cards.

Chat functionality

As a company that is known for simplifying technology, Apple is taking a similar approach with its customer service. “Have a question? Just text,” is the message the company features on its card website. Fortunately, there are plenty of fintechs that help banks simplify their customer experience. Two such companies are Finn.ai and Clinc, both of which leverage AI to save banks money on customer service representatives, while simplifying and expediting access to answers via a chat interface.

PFM

One way to win over customers is to convince them you’ll help them organize their finances and ultimately save them money. That’s why Apple is offering in-app PFM capabilities. And while the technology hasn’t changed much since it debuted before the fintech craze, the colorful user interface is beautiful enough to convince anyone to want to look at their spending behavior.

Banks have seemingly endless options to compete with this feature. And while most financial institutions currently offer some sort of PFM capabilities, it’s worth looking at it from a superficial point of view. Utah-based MX and Sweden-based Tink both offer visually-pleasing interfaces that are arguably more beautiful than Apple’s and are backed by powerful PFM engines.

Mobile app security

Apple’s iPhone holds the hardware for both fingerprint and facial recognition technology, and since the company is reinforcing its focus on security, it is leveraging biometrics for account access. With the right software, banks can leverage fingerprint and facial recognition technology as well. Jumio, IDology, and Mitek all offer technology banks can implement for fast account access, as well as account onboarding.

Fast onboarding

With access to consumer data, Apple has an advantage of being able to quickly onboard new consumers using existing consumer information. There are multiple fintechs that help banks onboard consumers quickly, as well, including Digital Onboarding, Q2’s Gro Solutions, and Fenergo. Digital Onboarding motivates customers to open new accounts using incentives and gamification. Gro Solutions touts the ability for customers to open and fund accounts in under four minutes. And Fenergo takes a holistic approach to onboarding, providing banks a lifetime view of the client to help perform data refreshes, ongoing due diligence, and upsell and cross-sell opportunities.

Rewards

Credit card rewards programs may seem like a feature of the past, but rewards are certainly still relevant. With its new card’s rewards program, Apple once again seeks to simplify things by offering consumers daily rewards. Two fintechs, Cardlytics and Cartera Commerce, offer tried and true loyalty and rewards programs. These offerings not only boost consumer loyalty, they also offer banks further insight and analysis into consumer spending.

Apple’s new credit card is shipping this summer. Fortunately for banks, fintechs are here to help them compete.

Cardlytics Hooks Wells Fargo as Partner

According to data-driven marketing company Cardlytics, every purchase tells a story. And it turns out that every partnership tells a story, too. During its earnings call this week, the Atlanta-based company announced a deal with Wells Fargo under which Cardlytics will power the bank’s cash-back rewards program.

“We are happy to announce the signing of an agreement with Wells Fargo to launch Cardlytics Direct nationally and across all digital channels,” said Lynne Laube, Cardlytics COO and co-founder. Cardlytics Direct leverages the Purchase Intelligence platform, which processes trillions of dollars of raw purchase data from millions of accounts across thousands of financial institutions. The company uses algorithms and machine learning to make it useful for marketing and analytics, developing insights for smarter business decisions.

While Purchase Intelligence will boost Wells Fargo’s cash-back rewards program, it will also benefit Cardlytics, which will receive access to a new wealth of customer data. “Adding Wells Fargo to the Cardlytics Purchase Intelligence platform will further strengthen our ability to provide actionable insights for our marketing clients. Marketers can act on these insights, reaching a scaled audience inside banks’ secure digital channels – where consumers are already thinking about their money,” said Laube.

Additionally, Cardlytics released its Q2 earnings report, highlighting a handful of growth metrics:

  • Total revenue was $35.6 million
  • Revenue increased 8% year-over-year, up from $32.8 million in the second quarter of 2017
  • Cardlytics Direct revenue was $35.1 million

At FinovateFall 2013, Cardlytics demoed its geolocation application, a solution that sends bank customers ads and offers based on their location.The company was the first fintech to go public early this year, now boasting a market capitalization of $408 million. Cardlytics also inked a deal with J.P. Morgan Chase and today announced it was listed on the Inc. 5,000 list for the fourth consecutive year. This year, Inc. ranked the company 2886 with revenue of $130.4 million and revenue growth of 142% from 2014 to 2017.
