TickSmith Raises $20 Million in New Funding for its Enterprise Data Web Store

Canadian fintech TickSmith is ringing in the new year with $20 million in Series A funding. The company will use the additional capital to support marketing of its Data Web Store, a B2B SaaS platform that enables organizations and institutions to generate new revenue streams based on their data.

“Data monetization is no longer limited to large enterprises,” TickSmith CEO Francis Wenzel said. “Selling data should be as simple as selling products in an e-commerce store, and data sellers of all sizes can now benefit from the same tools that power the largest, most robust data marketplaces in the world.”

The Series A was led by Investissement Québec, and featured participation from Fonds de solidarité FTQ, CME Ventures, Databricks Ventures, Anges Québec, Anges Québec Capital, and Illuminate Financial Management. The investment gives the company a total capital of $26.8 million, according to Crunchbase.

Founded in 2012, headquartered in Montreal, Québec, and making its Finovate debut two years later at FinovateFall 2014, TickSmith offers a platform that gives firms the technology they need to prepare, manage, package, and monetize data via private marketplaces. With customers in industries ranging from financial institutions and data providers to exchanges and brokerages, TickSmith helps organizations take advantage of a new world of data types – including alternative data and unstructured data.

The company’s technology also empowers them to enhance and refine existing data, enabling them to offer granular, micro-data services. This, as TickSmith Head of Product Nicolas Doyen, explained in a recent blog post, is allowing data providers to “(offer) more control to the ultimate consumers of their information services.” He added that this “modern approach to the data buying process” not only gives more control to the end-user, but also can help reduce the costs of data by “circumventing the data packaging approach used by traditional data suppliers.”

TickSmith ended 2021 with a collaboration with international cryptocurrency and digital asset technology company BlockFills. Earlier this month, TickSmith announced that IPOhub will use TickSmith’s Data Web Store platform to distribute and securely commercialize SME data from more than 3,000 companies and more than 100 different sources. A pan European investment information platform headquartered in Estonia and founded in 2017, IPOhub is also collaborating with TickSmith and market data specialist EOSE to help take IPOhub data on growth company IPOs to market.

“TickSmith’s technology is making it easy for us to offer our customers a personalized e-commerce data shopping experience with our very own data web store that showcases IPO and European SME data,” IPOhub CEO Silver Laus explained. “Their platform provides an end-to-end data monetization experience and helps us open up an entirely new channel to deliver data to our customers in just a few clicks.”

TickSmith Teams Up with CanDeal to Power DataVault Innovations

TickSmith Teams Up with CanDeal to Power DataVault Innovations

TickSmith will power the new market data platform for institutional electronic marketplace for Canadian debt and derivatives trading, CanDeal. The company will leverage the TickSmith Data Pooling Platform in order to support the launch of its DataVault Innovations data-as-a-service (DaaS) offering.

DataVault Innovations aggregates over-the-counter (OTC) data on multiple Canadian assets classes from banks and other sources and distributes it to end users and third-party providers. The DaaS technology also provides pricing, risk, and analytics features to help market participants bolster internal risk modeling and remain compliant with relevant regulations.

“TickSmith provides the well-tuned engine that DataVault Innovations needs for peak performance,” Head of DataVault Innovations Andre Craig said. “As an industry service, DataVault Innovations will not only provide the premium data to fuel more impactful product development; it will lead to more reliable benchmarks, expanded access to quality OTC data, and vastly improved risk management and regulatory compliance for FRTB and other mandates.”

Francis Wenzel, TickSmith CEO, complimented CanDeal’s consolidation of OTC multi-asset class data, and underscored TickSmith’s experience in capital markets. “We’re confident that we can deliver and unmatched service to DataVault Innovations, that will be robust enough to support an array of data, services, and clients for years to come.”

TickSmith demonstrated its TickVault and FIXVault financial big data platforms at FinovateFall 2014. More recently, the Montreal, Quebec, Canada-based company introduced its transaction cost analysis (TCA) solution, and announced a partnership with trading and market access technology provider Vela. TickSmith began the year with news that it had achieved Amazon Web Services (AWS) Financial Services Competency status.

TickSmith Lands $2 Million Investment from Illuminate Financial

TickSmith Lands $2 Million Investment from Illuminate Financial

In the Quebec-based company’s first round of funding, data management platform TickSmith announced today it has raised $1.6 million ($2 million CAD) from Illuminate Financial.

TickSmith will use the funds to further commercialize TickVault, its flagship product that works like a financial data lake for capital markets. Based on Hadoop technology, TickVault records, stores, and transforms structured and unstructured financial data by breaking down trade history, exchange and tick data, back office data, news, events, research, and more. In addition to analysis, the TickVault’s data scrubbing is also useful for compliance and risk management teams.

Francis Wenzel, CEO and co-founder of TickSmith, said, “Market participants recognize the competitive advantage that can be gained from a next generation capital markets data lake, not just in Europe and North America, but increasingly on a global basis.” Wenzel added, “As venture capital specialists within the capital markets technology space, Illuminate Financial are well positioned to help us further develop our flagship product, TickVault, as we continue to build an international client base.”

Founded in 2012, TickSmith presented TickVault and FIXVault at FinovateFall 2014. The company recently introduced a new performance-tracking module, Marketplace Advanced Insights, that gives market participants a better idea of how they are performing and how their peers are behaving. TickSmith partnered with CME Group in October of last year to provide the derivatives marketplace with access to historical data. The company also counts National Bank of Canada as a client.
