Finovate Alums Shine in 2019 Forbes Fintech 50 Roster

A baker’s dozen of Finovate alums has been honored this week with spots on the 2019 Forbes Fintech 50, an annual aggregation of what the editors called “the most innovative companies in fintech.”

Here are the Finovate alums that made the cut. Read the full list.

“Recognition as a leading innovator in fintech is tremendous validation for the hard work we’ve done at Marqeta to open the industry up to the possibilities and opportunities of modern card issuing,” company CEO and founder Jason Gardner said. Marqeta is among the 20 companies to make its first appearance on the Forbes Fintech 50 roster.

Also earning their first appearances on Forbes Fintech 50 roster are New York based mobile investment platform Stash and San Francisco supply chain payments innovator Tradeshift.

“Very excited to be included in the 2019 Forbes Fintech 50!,” Stash tweeted once the news was released at the start of the week, “Monday = made.”

“We made the list!” Tradeshift tweeted this morning.

Summarizing this year’s selection of top fintechs, the editors noted that while 19 out of the 50 fintechs featured are unicorns with valuations of more than $1 billion, a nearly equal amount – 20 startups – are making their first showing on Forbes top fintech list. The two areas where newcomers were more prevalent, according to the editors, were payments technology and startups serving the un- and underbanked.

Build Intelligent Apps at Enterprise Scale with Ayasdi Envision

Build Intelligent Apps at Enterprise Scale with Ayasdi Envision

“Envision” is an apt name for a new solution from a company renowned for its ability to turn big data into eye-popping, operational insights. This week Ayasdi, a specialist in machine intelligence software development and innovator in topological data analysis, introduced its latest technology, Ayasdi Envision. The new framework is built on the company’s enterprise-scale AI platform and makes it easier for businesses to develop and deploy intelligent applications.

“We’ve made it incredibly simple and natural for technical and non-technical counterparts to interact and collaborate on the development of intelligent applications using a visual, web-based workflow,” Ronaldo Ama, EVP, Product and Engineering at Ayasdi explained. “These applications surface the power of Ayasdi to discover, predict, justify, act, and learn on your data,” he said.

Pictured: Ayasdi Principal Data Strategist Michael Woods demonstrating Ayasdi Finance at FinovateFall 2014.

Ayasdi Envision provides an easy-to-learn and navigate interface that enables business users and data analysts to work collaboratively in a “workflow-oriented approach.” By using widgets as the building blocks, Envision allows platform users who are not developers to build relatively sophisticated applications that are tailored to solve specific business problems. In a conversation with Datanami, Ama explained that being able to have business users and data analyst working so closely meant less time and less money when it comes to development. He added that it was also an excellent example of how the Ayasdi brought the power of AI to “just a regular customer.”

Ayasdi’s technology takes advantage of the trend toward businesses using intelligent apps to maximize their use of big data. In the company’s announcement, it highlighted Gartner’s Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2017 report which noted, “intelligent apps are not limited to new digital assistants – every existing software category from security tooling to enterprise applications such as marketing or ERP will be infused with AI enabled capabilities.”

During his Finovate demo, Ayasdi Principal Data Strategist Michael Woods explained the challenge succinctly. “Data generation is rapidly outpacing data interpretation. Which is to say that your businesses are capturing more data than you can effectively understand and act upon.” Because of this, Woods added, “there is significant value that you are failing to monetize in the data you have already captured today.” Since its founding in 2008, Ayasdi has helped companies ranging from Citigroup and General Electric to Anadarko and Mount Sinai Hospital gain critical insights from their data.

Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, Ayasdi demonstrated its Ayasdi Finance platform at FinovateFall 2014. Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with HSBC to help the banking group automate compliance processes. Ayasdi hired former IBM executive Bob Griffin to serve as CEO in March, the same month the company was named to Planet Compliance’s inaugural RegTech Top 100 Power list. The company has raised more than $106 million in funding, most recently completing a $55 million Series C in March 2015. Ayasdi includes Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Institutional Venture Partners, FLOODGATE, and Khosla Ventures among its investors.

RegTech_image

Call it them the Finovate Fifth.

Nearly 20 of the companies highlighted in Planet Compliance’s new RegTech Top 100 Power list – and five of the top ten – are Finovate and/or FinDEVr alums. To measure “power”, Planet Compliance used an algorithm that measured a company’s activity in the media, as well as online and in social media including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

Interestingly, Planet Compliance says it has added a “secret ingredient” to the ranking system. It is also worth noting that their definition of RegTech is broad enough to include not just ID verification/authentications specialists, but biometric security innovators, as well.

So let’s take a look at how Finovate/FinDEVr alums stacked up.

Five Finovate Alums Named 2015 Technology Pioneers by World Economic Forum

Five Finovate Alums Named 2015 Technology Pioneers by World Economic Forum

WorldEconomicForum_homepage

According to the World Economic Forum, whatever it takes to be a Technology Pioneer in 2015, a quintet of Finovate alums has got it.

Ayasdi, FutureAdvisor, Ripple Labs, Sedicii Innovations, and TransferWise were named as 2015 Technology Pioneers in the World Economic Forum’s Information Technology category.

AyasdiLogo_FF2014The Technology Pioneers program was launched in 2000 to give recognition to early stage companies developing new technologies that will have a “significant impact on business and society.” Previous winners have included AirBnB, Google, Next, SoundCloud, and Twitter.

futureadvisorlogoThe World Economic Forum chooses approximately 30 companies each year out of a pool of “hundreds” of applicants. The field is winnowed by a selection committee consisting of top technology experts, academics, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists who review the applications and submit a recommendation to the World Economic Forum. Since the program began, 600 companies from five continents have been represented in the Technology Pioneer program.

RippleLabs_logoCompanies interested in the 2016 program should apply before February 5, 2016. Applicants will be notified by mid-July 2016. More information about the program is available here.

Sedicii_logo_high-resAyasdi made its Finovate debut at FinovateFall 2014 in New York. The company raised $55 million in funding this spring, taking its total to more than $100 million. FutureAdvisor recently unveiled its FutureGift solution, to make it easier for friends and family to make contributions to a child’s college savings plan. The San Francisco-based company demoed its platform at FinovateFall 2013, and has total capital of more than $20 million.
